Platinum and gold are highly X-ray-absorbing. Therefore, when such materials are present in an x-ray fluoroscopy image, a dark spot in the image shows the location of the material. Rings or tips from gold or platinum are mounted on catheter systems to permit clear visualization of the medical device, and its exact position in the human body. Stents made from fine metal wire are used in vascular surgery and other endovascular procedures.
